Morocco Trekking - M’Goun Summit Trek
Morocco is a wonderful addition to our trekking calendar here at Graham Uney Mountaineering, and we’re over the moon to be including a few treks in this wonderful country from 2027.
There are a small clutch of mountains in the Atlas range that reach the magical height of 4000m. This puts them on a par with the highest mountains of the Alps, at least in terms of altitude, but being in North Africa, on the high peaks of the Atlas the weather here tends to be better than in the Alps, and Morocco is an easy, cheap flight from the UK too!
M’Goun is one of these 4000m mountains. At 4071m it dominates the eastern end of the Atlas range, and is the most prominent mountain in the area.
This stunning summer summit trek gives the perfect introduction to high altitude, and is a superb choice for anyone making their first foray into the Greater Ranges. You may have already climbed Mount Toubkhal with us and want to experience a more remote, wilder side of the Atlas Mountains, or you might be booking both of these treks back to back. Whatever your reason for choosing to join us in Morocco, you’ll have a wonderful trekking adventure in gorgeous surroundings, in good company!
This is a week long trekking holiday, so can easily fit into time off work! But, you can also combine our ascent of M’Goun with Toubkhal if you wish, giving you two weeks in this wonderful country.
We meet in Marrakesh (lots of cheap flights from UK airports) where you’ll be met at the airport. We have a short transfer to reach our riad in Marrakesh which is situated within the medina - the oldest and most vibrant part of the city. Our outline itinerary is here:
Day 1: arrival at Marrakesh airport and transfer to a carefully selected riad in the medina. Take a step back in time and lose yourself in the maze of souks and spice markets in the ancient medina. Wander the labyrinth of stalls with colourful skeins of wool drying above your head against bright blue skies. Pick your way through alleys lined with elaborately decorated brass lamps while dodging donkeys as well as locals on scooters as you go. Watch artisans making their wares right where they sell them. Enjoy some banter and barter with a friendly seller, then indulge in a traditional mint tea or thick Moroccan coffee to recover.
There is non-stop action at the Djemaa el-Fna, the huge, open UNESCO-listed public square in the medina. See jugglers, henna tattoo-artists, potion-sellers, musicians, snake-charmers and acrobats by day and buy a freshly-squeezed orange juice from any one of a myriad of vendors. At night, witness musicians, storytellers, belly dancers and a massive alfresco restaurant complete with friendly maitre d’s calling for your custom in five different languages. The call to prayer from the iconic Koutoubia Minaret adds a further exciting dimension.
Day 2: We depart Marrakech for the central High Atlas, passing through the small town of Azilal. We then take the road over the Tirghis Pass at 2600m before arriving in Aarous, the starting point of our M’Goun trek. We climb along the Arouss valley to reach the superb Ikiss pasture, where we camp at 2300m.
Day 3: After breakfast, we begin our walk by climbing to the Aghri pass at 2400m. Along the way, we’ll come across some sheepfolds and perhaps (if we’re lucky and in summer) camels belonging to nomadic families. After a 3-hour walk, we’ll reach the Aghri pass, where we’ll have an amazing view towards the summit of M’goun, the highest point of the central High Atlas. We then descend (approx. 2 hrs) to the Tarkeddit plateau, where our cook will welcome us with an open-air picnic. This is also the plateau where we’ll set up our camp. The afternoon will be devoted to a siesta or short walks for those who still have the energy!
Day 4: This will be the most intensive day of our trek. We’ll leave camp at dawn, and start the walk with a gentle gradient (1h30), followed by a more challenging climb (where you may find fossils along the way) (2h30). Then we reach the ridge where we can start to see the highest peaks of the High Atlas (1h30). When we reach the summit of M’Goun, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and a breathtaking panoramic view of the peaks of the High Atlas, the Valley of the Roses and the Saghro massif. Then it’s downhill for 2h30 to our camp site. We drink a well-deserved green mint tea after this beautiful day’s walking.
Day 5: After breakfast, we start our walk with a short descent and then a short ascent to the Asdrm 2400 pass before descending to the Aarous valley. After lunch under the walnut trees, we’ll take the car back to Marrakech.
Day 6: We spend the day in Marrakesh, exploring at will.
Day 7: Depart for home
