Camping Leader Assessment

The Camping Leader replaces the old Expedition Skills Module, and is aimed at those who want to supervise groups camping in organised campsites, farms, and in wild camping locations too (if they hold a walking award and are operating within the scope of their award).

The main differences between the Camping Leader and the old Expedition Skills Module are the Camping Leader involves an online training module, followed by an in-person, practical assessment. The assessment is one day in duration. The other main difference is that anybody can register and take part in the Camping Leader - there is no requirement to already hold a Mountain Training walking award to access this course. This makes it suitable for those who are involved in assisting in camps with groups, who may not necessarily get involved in supervising on walks.

To register for the Camping Leader, and to access the Course Handbook and the online training module, go to the link on the Mountain Training website here.

Course Prerequisites

To register and do the online training module:

  • You must be at least 17 years old to register and do the online training module

  • You must have some supervisory experience of overnight camping

  • You must have a genuine interest in the supervision of groups

  • You must create an account on our system and register for the Camping Leader qualification (cost: £25)

To book onto the assessment

  • You must be at least 18 years old to book onto the assessment

  • You must have recorded (ideally on DLOG*):

    • 5 personal overnight camps (minimum), ideally in a variety of contexts.

    • 2 group camps where you assisted with or oversaw the groups. If personal camping has only been undertaken when also supervising a group, then these two group camps can be part of the total submitted for personal camping i.e. some candidates may need to log only 5 overnight camps in total. Reflective comments must accompany the group supervision evidence.

  • You must be familiar with the syllabus.

  • You must be an experienced self-sufficient camper.

  • You must have experience of the supervision of camping groups.

  • You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least one full day or eight hours of instruction and included an element of assessment
