Our Grades Explained

Trekking Grades

T1: Generally straightforward trekking routes on well established though rough mountain paths, and usually using lodges/tea houses for accommodation. These treks will usually involve at least one day trekking above 4000m. Good hillwalking fitness required.

T2: Often many days will be similar to T1 treks, but with some days above 5000m. Good hillwalking fitness is required, but no technical skills needed, apart from the occasional use of microspikes (we’ll provide these were needed). T2 treks are generally lodge-based, but may involve some nights camping.

T3: As for T1 and T2, but there may be some technical sections such as crossing high passes that will require the use of harnesses and fixed ropes. Crampons and ice axes may also be needed. General hillwalking fitness is essential, as are the skills to use a mountaineering ice axe and crampons safely. See our Scottish Winter Skills courses to gain these skills. Usually a mix of nights spent in lodges, and camping in more remote locations.

Mountaineering Grades

M1: For the approach to the mountains, see T2 and T3. Good mountain walking fitness is essential, as are winter skills. As a general guide you should have ice axe and crampon skills gained and practiced over a number of winters in the mountains of the UK. Basic climbing skills are also needed - this is not the time to learn how to put on a harness, tie in, or use an ascender on fixed ropes (although we will have further training on this during the expedition). Experience of seconding winter climbs to include some Scottish Grade II will be useful.

M2: As for M1, but these expeditions are more sustained over a longer period of time, perhaps on a bigger mountain, or moving from one mountain to another.
