Ever since Graham became a qualified Mountain Leader in 1996 he has run an in-depth programme of map and compass courses for ramblers, hillwalkers, and mountaineers. In 1998 he registered as an accredited provider of the National Navigation Award Scheme, but now has developed his own series of courses to teach navigation in a progressive way, from the absolute basics for those who are terrified of picking up a map and compass, right through to the more experienced navigator who wants to learn advanced skills for those more difficult navigation situations.
We offer navigation courses at three levels: beginner, Intermediate, and advanced. While many people find it useful to work through all three stages, if you already have some navigation ability you can jump in at whatever level suits you.
These one-day courses take place in the Lowther Valley on the eastern fringes of the Lake District. They start with an indoor session during which you will learn about map types, scales, and map symbols. We'll also teach you how to orientate the map, and how to understand grid references. After a quick tea and biscuit break we'll then head outside, and begin putting it all into practice, following a course around linear features such as paths, tracks, walls, fences, and streams. By the end of the day you will be confident to undertake countryside and low level walks anywhere in the UK

These one-day courses take place in the beautiful low fell and moorland country on the eastern flanks of the High Street range in the Lake District. They are outdoor based for the full day. On this course we focus on measuring distance, on the map and on the ground, and taking and following compass bearings. Over the years we've developed a sure-fire way of teaching compass skills, even to those who feel that this is one skill that is beyond them! By the end of the day you will be confident in getting off the paths and tracks on hill walks, and will be able to measure distances over rough terrain.
